Grace Weston

Grace Danielle Weston was the stillborn daughter of Julia and Nathan Weston. She was delivered at thirty-eight weeks gestation on June 23, 2006, after four earlier miscarriages. Her middle name honored Julia’s sister Danielle, and she became the older sister of Logan Weston, who was born in 2008.

Pregnancy and Birth

Grace was Julia and Nathan’s fifth pregnancy and the first carried to thirty-eight weeks. Her approximate due date was July 7, 2006, making the June 23 delivery about two weeks early. Her parents chose her first name during the pregnancy; to them, Grace named the mercy they hoped for after four miscarriages. They prepared a sage-green nursery for her at their Baltimore home.

Labor began during the afternoon of June 22. At Johns Hopkins Hospital, an ultrasound confirmed that Grace had died in utero. Julia delivered her at approximately 3:47 a.m. on June 23 after about twelve hours of labor. The autopsy was inconclusive, and no definitive cause of death was established.

Grace weighed six pounds fourteen ounces and was nineteen inches long. She had deep brown skin, darker than Logan’s at birth two years later, and dark curly hair. Her features included Julia’s forehead and long eyelashes and Nathan’s hands. She was still warm when she was placed in Julia’s arms. Julia held her for about forty minutes; Nathan, Diana, and Martha also held her, and Nathan’s hands trembled. The nurses helped dress Grace with a blanket and a small knitted hat. The hospital took a photograph. Diana was already staying with Julia and Nathan in Baltimore before labor began; Nisha was the first of Julia’s siblings to arrive from Houston after the delivery.

Family Remembrance

Grace was buried on June 27, 2006, after a small private service. Her marker reads, “Grace Danielle Weston—June 23, 2006—Held.” Her family continued to call her Gracie. Her hospital photograph remained in a keepsake box in Julia and Nathan’s bedroom, and the nursery prepared for her remained closed for approximately two years before it became Logan’s room.

Julia and Nathan told Logan about Grace while he was a child. He learned her full name when he was about five and saw her photograph at about eight. He grew up knowing that he had an older sister and sometimes wondered what she would have been like.

In 2021, Julia read research suggesting that PCOS could be a risk factor for stillbirth at term. The study did not establish why Grace died. Julia cried alone in her study; when Nathan found her there, he brought her water and sat beside her.

Later, Logan had Grace’s hospital photographs digitized and gave Julia an album with physical and digital copies for Mother’s Day. Julia, Nathan, and Logan sat together with the photographs and cried. The original photograph remained in the keepsake box.
